The Banking Method vs. Problem Posing Education

In Paulo Friere's book Pedagogy of the Opressed he discusses his theory of the banking education and problem posing education. Friere takes a critical look at the traditional education system and works to create a more progressive education system that would be more of a benefit for students. Chapter two of his book brings to light his idea of the banking method. [Here is a link that summarizes Chapter 2!] The banking method is the way in which traditionally teachers “deposit” information into the students brains (Freire 72, 2000). This transfer of information does not engage the student however, it is the notion that the teacher has all of the information and that the student has to absorb and accept the information being given to them (Freire 73, 2000). The banking method places the teacher on a pedestal. They are thought to be all knowing, the discipliners, the enforcer of choices, etc. (Freire 73, 2000).
Friere realized that this method of teaching was not very beneficial to the student. Rather than engaging in material they were learning, they simply listened and memorized. The banking method hinders the students’ potential for growth in any given field.  Friere came up with an alternative way if teaching which he deemed problem posing education. Friere describes problem posing education as a way for “people [to] develop their power to perceive critically” (Friere 83, 2000). It is where students are giving the opportunity to learn on their own terms with a teacher there to assist them on their journey, rather than to deposit information into them. I found an article that lays out how this kind of hands on, student collaboration type of education which show how it can work and also lays out some of the worries that people may have about it. Problem posing education creates an environment where students get to learn in different ways, in a more hands on way. This type of education promotes growth in students, and gives them the chance to come up with their own ideas and explore subjects in a different way while also collaborating and learning with other students.
An example in society where this can be seen as beneficial is in the working world. If you are training an employee to work for you, rather than throwing the information in their direction it would be more helpful for the employee (and for the future your business) if they got to experience hands on. It gives them the opportunity to ask questions, see what their weaknesses and strengths are, and build a fundamental knowledge of the work environment. By using the problem posing education to teach the employee it gives them a better understanding of the workings of the company and their specific role within the company. In doing this, it creates the opportunity for the employee to come up with new and innovative ideas that could further the future of the company. It also opens up the door for communication between the boss and the employee. It also opens up communication between the new employee and other employees, leading the way to efficent teamwork (which, according to this article, is extremely benefitial to the company). If the employee had simply learned their job through the banking method they would have a basic knowledge of the role they are expected to fill but would not be able to apply it as well or be able to move forward as easily in the company. There is also a lesser chance of communication throughout the company.
